Petrosino et al. (2018): Using Group-based Cloud Computational Models as a Way to Help Students Investigate Complex Yellowstone Trophic Interactions

The following is a poster presentation of research that my colleagues and I have been engaged with for the past few years on agent-based modeling and will be presented at the Southwest Regional 2018 American Society of Engineering Education Conference in April.   ASEE Gulf Coast 2018 - Poster - 03-06-2018b by Anthony Petrosino on Scribd

Hudson County Growth Rates (see full data below) CLICK TO ENLARGE  How would you feel is after 5 years of schooling (Grades 3 to 8),  your child advanced the equivalent of 6 years? In Chicago where new data shows this is occurring, parents, teachers, school officials and taxpayers are thrilled. Now, how would you feel if  after 5 years of schooling you found out your child advanced only 4.1 years? That is the case of what is occurring in Hoboken, NJ.  In the 5 years between Grades 3 and Grade 8, students in that district are advancing only 4.1 grade years. The lowest rate in Hudson County, and one of the lowest rates  in the State of New Jersey and in the nation.  An article in the New York Times by Emily Badger and Kevin Quealy spotlights the work of researchers at Stanford University should be of great interest. The researchers not only used state test scores but a host of other data to present one of the most comprehensive studies yet on student success and effectiveness of school

State mandated testing has put pressure on school districts and Board trustees all over the county. This case of accusations of cheating and actual cheating in Hoboken, New Jersey serves as an interesting example and worthy of some examination.  Specifically, this post is about two somewhat related stories. The first story is about a false allegation made by a sitting Board trustee at a candidates forum a few years ago in order to help explain why test scores were higher during previous Board leadership and plummeting during their own administration.  The second story is about an actual cheating scandal (erasure of wrong answers to correct answers) that took place specifically in order to raise state test scores. The two stories are more than tangentially connected as you will see since they center around the same then board trustee. The false accusations were part of a political attack, the real cheating scandal under a political group known as "Kids First" was quietly passe

Professor Receives NSF Award to Increase Student Pursuit of STEM Careers Dr. Anthony Petrosino Imagine a classroom of middle-school or high-school students engaged in a collaborative high-tech project, like untangling the complexities of traffic-flow simulation or mapping out the potential spread of Zika. College of Education Associate Professor Anthony Petrosino is helping educators learn to teach their students to develop and work on projects just like these. This fall, he and University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Professor Walter Stroup were awarded a $457,755 grant from the National Science Foundation for research that will help educators increase students’ motivation and capacity to pursue science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers. The project, which focuses on collaborative, interactive, cloud-based instruction and learning, will demonstrate how network-supported, group-based learning grounded in the principles of Generative Design can improve learning o
